If you’re a follower of such body transformation news, then you must’ve heard about Gabourey Sidibe’s weight loss journey, which is all thanks to her weight loss surgery. But, it’s not the only reason for her lighter self; it’s also because of her diet control and workout regimen.
Without further ado, let’s just dig deeper into how Gabourey Sidibe lost all that weight and what she has to say about it!
How Much Weight did Gabourey lose?
Well, the 32 years old actress Gabourey Sidibe has kept her fans guessing about how much weight she had lost after her surgery. The lady divulged on her book, This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare that she would set a goal every time she achieves it. Even now, she has a goal that she wants to get to, but she isn’t revealing the numbers. The reason?
My starting weight and my goal weight, they’re personal.
The lady feels that sharing her weight loss numbers is not the right thing to do. She also fears that if a lot of people are involved in her journey, the endeavor might end too soon. Hence, she’s kept the numbers away from her fans, but she frequently posts selfies on her Instagram, and by far, she looks skinnier than she was three years earlier.
What did She Actually do to Lose Weight?
As already revealed, the Empire star opted for a weight loss surgery to lose weight. She went under the needle for a Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery in May 2016, a month and two days after the first meeting with the Docs and since, lost a ton of weight. This, too, came after she found out about her Type 2 diabetes, which actually helped her make the decision.
If you’re searching for what a Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery is, then it’s all about restricting food the stomach can hold. There are a lot of procedures such as Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Adjustable Gastric Band, and Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch. Gabby doesn’t seem to want to open up about the method she used but, it sure is working charms.

Before Gabby’s surgery, the surgeon told her that there wouldn’t be half of her stomach anymore. Her stomach was cut in half which eventually limited her hunger and of course, her eating capacity. But, this was not all that worked; diet and workout also worked miracles in her weight loss journey.
Diet and Workout
Yes, the surgery helped, but it was not the only thing behind her skinnier figure. Her lifestyle and her eating habits also made a huge difference in her journey.
Gabourey revealed that for around 17 days after the surgery, she only survived on liquid. But, now, she eats five meals per day. She took up advice from her nutritionist and has created her own meal plans, one even for when she’s busy.
The 5 feet 5 inches tall actress also cooks a lot more now, and she also revealed that she has a lot of apps to keep check of her food intake.
As for her workout, she trains three to four days a week with her trainer. When she’s not training, she goes for a swim. But, it’s not just a swim as she completes 20 laps in the pool. Before her swimming routine, she drinks a protein shake, and then later in the day, she has her breakfast.
Sidibe reveals that she is as active as she can be, which she believes is a lot more than the average. She also has an Apple Watch to track the calories she has burned.
In addition to working out and swimming, she also remains active by riding a tricycle. She revealed that she rode around in her tricycle around the set while filming for Empire.
The Reason Behind Her Weight Loss Journey!
For Gabourey, surgery wasn’t a sixty seconds thought, but it was a much thought process for her. As she revealed, she was trying to lose weight for ages, but nothing worked for her.
When the actress started working out with her first trainer, she lost plenty of weight initially, but later on, she didn’t. She says she worked hard and tried really hard. In fact, she even outlived her first trainer as he passed away with cancer.
When nothing worked, surgery was the only way out for her. She didn’t have any projects around March and July in 2016, and she took it as an opportunity to meet up with the Doctors. A month and two days later, she was at the hospital getting Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery.
According to Gabby, her surgery had nothing to do with being beautiful, it was all about walking comfortably in heels. She wanted to do a cartwheel and not feel pain every time she walked up a flight of stairs. Well, these are perfect reasons, aren’t they?
The Aftermath of the Surgery
Well, first and foremost, the Precious actress thinks she should have done it sooner. She revealed that she wouldn’t have lost as much weight if not for the surgery.
For a while, she was terrified with her weight and would check the scale “five to six times a day” as it changed throughout the day. As days went by, she figured out a way to not be so obsessive about her weight, and hence, she weighed herself only once every two weeks.
After her weight loss surgery, the American Horror Story actress needs to have her dress fit every single episode because of her changing weight. Though that, she reveals that she still wears the same stuff.

Before her surgery, she took her body as an enemy, but now she feels that it was just a waste of time. “Life is truly about choices and decisions,” the NY-born star wishes that she’d made a better choice to love her body sooner.
It has taken me years to realize that what I was born with is all beautiful.
All in all, the lady who found it hard to lose weight and so, opted for surgery, feels and looks quite different at present. Now, she is a more confident woman who just loves her body. Cheers for that!
